Early ASL ION Nettop Sample Gets Disected and Evaluated
The people at PCOnline.com.cn [Translated] got a chance to investigate and disect an early sample of an ASL ION nettop. Like the last group of ION products that was posted here, this ASL nettop is also an early sample and the actual product should have better build quality than what you see in the pictures (we hope).
This nettop from ASL is nothing special as far as ION nettops are concerned, however, it does have a couple interesting aspects. First, it has an 8GB Compact Flash card instead of a normal hard disk. It uses a standard CF card adapter so you could upgrade the storage with any CF card. The CF adapter interfaces with the motherboard via a SATA port on the motherboard so a traditional hard drive should work if you can find some place to cram it. Also, the ASL ION nettop sports a built-in DVD drive. A built-in optical drive seems to be a rarity in nettops these days which many manufacturers are seeming to throw out due to size constraints. This ASL demo model makes use of a very slim profile DVD drive so that it can still maintain a somewhat small footprint.
Head on over to PCOnline.com.cn [Translated] for a much more in-depth review. Also, thanks to Li Shih-Pu for the tip.
