Even more trouble for NVIDIA coming from Intel today regarding Intel’s announcement of the Pine Trail platform. The juggernaut chip-maker Intel has decided to outsource the graphics processing for Pine Trail to Broadcom. Folks are saying that the chip Intel will be using is the Broadcom BCM70015 which is quite capable of HD decoding. The chip supports all of the top codecs including AVC, H.264, VC-1, WMV9 and MPEG2 all while using very little power. Best yet, it can run on Windows XP, Windows 7, and Linux.

Power consumption when idling sits only at 30mW which is significantly lower than NVIDIA Tegra’s power consumption at 100mW. When decoding 1080p content it maxes out at 1W while Tegra decodes the same content at 2W.

Who knows how this battle between ION and Pine Trail will turn out, but one thing is for sure, we are in for an interesting ride.
