Lenovo’s IdeaPad S12 Announced: King of Netbooks
This is the first time I’ve been truly confused about whether a machine is a netbook or a fully-fledged notebook. The IdeaPad S12, which is expected to be released in August, is jam packed with all kinds of tasty features that are very foreign to the common netbook.
The S12 comes with a large 12.1″ screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 which is huge compared to most netbooks. The netbook rounds out its feature base with an Atom N270 processor, 1 GB DDR2 RAM, a 160 GB HDD, six-cell battery, 1.3 megapixel webcam, B/G wireless, multitouch trackpad, and a full-sized keyboard. For ports, it has 3 USB, HDMI, and an ExpressCard slot (it is Lenovo after all). It weighs in at 3.7 pounds and has a thickness of 1.14 inches.
At $499 it is on the pricey end of the netbook spectrum, but this is so much more than a netbook. Maybe we need a new silly term to describe this thing like net-notebook or naptop. For $50 dollars less you could get this same machine without ION (and no HDMI port), but why?
