Next Iteration of ION Will Use 40nm Architecture
As of right now all ION chips are manufactured with a 55nm process, but that should change by the end of 2009. A smaller manufacturing process means that the chip can be made smaller and also produce less heat than older larger chips. We can also expect to see a slight performance increase as well due to a more efficient use of CPU core real estate.
ION 2 is scheduled to be released late in 2009, which just happens to be right around the same time that Intel will be releasing their Pineview DC dual-core processor. Although the Pineview processors will have their own graphics chips and memory controllers built-in, ION will still be compatible with Pineview processors. Maybe Intel and NVIDIA can still get along after all.
